A job description lets you know what you’re responsible for. If you don’t know what you’re responsible for, you might spend your time doing all the wrong things and celebrating all the wrong wins. Well Jesus didn’t want this happening with the church, so he gave us a clear job description, letting us know what we’re responsible for until he returns. We read of this job description in Matthew 28:19-20. According to Jesus, a church has three main responsibilities:
- Make disciples. Jesus said “…go and make disciples of all nations…” In other words, Jesus was telling us: Get people saved!
- Mark disciples. Jesus said to baptize the new disciples in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. In other words, Jesus was telling us: Get people baptized!
- Mature disciples. Jesus said to teach the new disciples to obey everything he had commanded. In other words, Jesus was telling us: Teach people the Bible!
Until Jesus returns, we (the church) are responsible to help people get saved, get them baptized and help teach them the Bible. On Sunday we help people get saved, we help people be water baptized, and we teach people the Bible. We continue teaching people the Bible throughout the week through our groups ministry.
If we want God to say of our church “Well done my good and faithful servant”, we’ve got to keep busy with the responsibilities laid out in our job description! May God empower us to be faithful to this end in 2016!
